(when it seemed nobody else would)
By the Summer of 2020, the national media whipped the whole world in a frenzy about a new pandemic virus called COVID-19. Following State of Illinois guidelines; our local media and politicians suspended all outdoor community events, including Quincy’s Traditional July 4th Fireworks display, ultimately canceling them.
With only three weeks of planning, The Quincy Tea Party and Re-Open Adams County responded to our community’s outcry. We created the Quincy Freedom Fest to ensure Quincy celebrates our Nation’s 244th birthday and promotes local small businesses! We invited people to come with or without masks and encouraged social distancing. We also suggested those at risk (elderly or immunodeficient) come, park on the bluff, and we enabled them to celebrate freedom safety from their vehicles. The Quincy Park District refused our requests to shoot the fireworks from Quinsippi Island. We ultimately requested and received permission from Missouri Ayerco to discharge them from the river’s Missouri (Freedomland) shore. Despite the fireworks being almost a mile away, J&M Displays provided a fantastic fireworks show. The positive feedback from the community was overwhelming. We felt it was essential to have some normalcy in this upside-down world.
We had the most professional pyrotechnicians, John Hamann, and crew. They helped us celebrate our Nation’s Independence in such a fitting way. The Small Business Street Fair was also a huge success, made possible by dozens of great volunteers and community leaders as vendors and buyers. We had great live music by ImpaKt. None of it would’ve been possible without our financial sponsors and those that contributed in-kind services to support the celebration. Love’s Me Photography captured incredible images of that beautiful night. We were very excited to see so many of our neighbors came out to Celebrate America – the Greatest Country on Earth!
In 2021, we decided to continue Quincy’s long-standing “Independence Day” tradition and formed Quincy Freedom Fest, Inc. to focus solely on the success of this annual event. Our community is craving normalcy more than ever, so we’ll continue using this opportunity to highlight local Small Business Owners. They have been struggling to sustain “Lock-Downs” and “guidelines” that favor big-box and internet retailers over the past year. We’re offering business owners booths at no charge to market themselves and network with the community. There will be local live bands and many children’s activities…as much as we can fit in Clat Adams Bicentennial Park. A grand fireworks display from Quinsippi Island will cap off the weekend’s festivities.
Anyone wishing to donate to make this year’s Quincy Freedom Fest event the best celebration of freedom we’ve ever experienced, please visit the “Want to Sponsor” page.
